The Arabic gum, with the CAS registry number 9000-01-5, is also known as Acacia ampliceps gum. Its EINECS number is 232-519-5. It is powdered exudate from various acacia species, especially A. senegal (Leguminosae). It forms mucilage or syrup in water. It is used as a suspending agent, excipient, and emulsifier in foods and pharmaceuticals. It should be sealed and stored in a cool and dry place. The main populations of Arabic gum species are harvested in Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. The gum exported came from the band of Acacia trees which once covered much of the Sahel region: the southern littoral of the Sahara Desert running from the Atlantic to the Red Sea.
