On photolysis in the presence of Fe(Co)5 allenes and aldehydes give (trimethylenemethane)tricarbonyliron complexes 5 and 5'.The reaction is highly stereospecific and involves the intermediate formation of ?-allyl-?-complexes, which spontaneously eliminate CO2 to give 5 and 5'.To our knowledge, this is the first example of a carbonyl olefination by means of a quarternary carbon of a cumulene. The trimethylenemethane ligand of 5 may be isomerised at 180 deg C without decomposition via rotation of substituents around the C=C bonds.
