Crystal structures of Zn(SR)2 complexes: Structural models for the proposed [Zn(cys-S)2(his)2] center in transcription factor IIIA and related nucleic acid binding proteins

[Zn(S-2,3,5,6-Me4C6H) 2(1-methylimidazole)2] (1) and [Zn(S-2,4,6-i-Pr3C6H2)2(bpy)] (2) were synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Both 1 and 2 have monomeric structures with distorted-tetrahedral ZnS2N2 cores. The metrical parameters of 1 should closely approach those for [Zn(cys-S)2(his)2] centers, which have been postulated in transcription factor IIIA and related nucleic acid binding proteins. The Zn-S and Zn-N distances are 2.300 (2) and 2.047 (10) ? for 1 and 2.256 (3) and 2.099 (10) ? for 2. The trends in the changes in the M-S and M-N bond distance for the series [M(SR)x(imidazole)4-x] are discussed. Crystallographic parameters: for 1, monoclinic space group P21/c with a = 15.003 (4) ?, b = 13.786 (4) ?, c = 15.677 (3) ?, β = 114.72 (2)°, V = 2945 (3) ?3, and Z = 4; for 2, orthorhombic space group Pbc21 with a = 12.816 (2) ?, b = 15.581 (2) ?, c = 19.193 (2) ?, V = 3833 (2) ?3, and Z = 4.
