(η-Benzene)bis(trimethylphosphine)iron reacts with 6,6-dimethylfulvene, 6-phenylfulvene, 6,6-diphenylfulvene, cyclobutene, indene, 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane, and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane giving 5,η5'-C5H4CMe2C5H4)>, 5,ηη5'-C5H4CH(Ph)CH(Ph)C5H4>>, 5-C5H4CPh2)(PMe3)2>, 4H6)(PMe3)>, 5-C9H7)PMe3)2H>, and 6H6)-(R2PCH2CH2PR2)> (R = Me or Ph) respectively.Treatment of 6H6)(PMe3)2> with buta-1,3-diene gives a mixture of 6H6)(η-C4H6)> and 4H6)2(PMe3)>; with cycloheptatriene a mixture of 4-C4H8)(PMe3)3>, 6H6)(η4-C7H8)>, and 5-C7H7)(η5-C7H9)> is obtained. 6H6)(PMe3)2> reacts with cyclohexa-1,3-diene causing an unusual coupling giving the compound 3,η3'-C12H16)(PMe3)2> which has been characterized by (1)H-(1)H COSY, heteronuclear (1)H-(13)C shift correlation two dimensional n.m.r. experiments and crystal structure determination.Protonation of 3,η3'-C12H16)(PMe3)2> gives the cation 6H8-H*)(PMe3)3>+ wich contains an agostic hydrogen.
