To investigate the effect of the anion on the catalytic effect of η3-allylbis(ligand)nickel(II) complexes X, the tetrafluoroborates (X = BF4) with L = Me3CNC, P(OPh)3, P(OThym)3, COD1/2 and SbPh3 were prepared, characterized by elemental analysis and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and their catalytic properties compared with the corresponding hexafluorophosphates (X = PF6).On account of the stronger coordination of the anion, the tetrafluoroborates show a rather reduced activity and cis selectivity, depending on ligand L.

Synthesis and characterisation of a series of η3-allylbis(triphenylphosphite)nickel(II) complexes X with the anions X- = PF6-, B(O2C6H4)2-, BF4-, AlBr4-, CH3CH4SO3-, Cl-, Br-, I- is described.Conductivity measurements and 13C NMR spectroscopy confirmed increasing coordination of the anion in the given series, which is accompanied by some inhibition, to a greater or lesser extent, of the catalytic activity of the complexes in stereospecific butadiene polymerization.
