Dimethyl acetals of mono and dinitrobenzophenones are easily prepared in quantitative yield by treatment with methanol and dimethylsulfite in the presence of continuous hydrogen chloride stream. The new acetals were fully characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR,IR spectroscopy, MS(EI) and elemental analysis.

Acetals of diaryl ketones with nitro, halo and methoxy substituents are easily prepared in high yield by treatment with an alcohol and the corresponding trialkyl ortoformate in the presence of catalytic amount of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid.
