Phosphorane, tetrafluoro(trifluoromethyl)-, also known as tetrafluorophosphonium trifluoromethylide, is a highly reactive and unstable organophosphorus compound with the chemical formula CF3PF4. It is a colorless, volatile, and highly toxic substance that is sensitive to moisture and air. Phosphorane, tetrafluoro(trifluoromethyl)- is formed by the reaction of phosphorus trifluoride (PF3) with antimony pentafluoride (SbF5) in anhydrous hydrofluoric acid (HF). Due to its high reactivity, it is primarily used as a reagent in organic synthesis, particularly in the formation of phosphorus-carbon bonds and as a source of the highly electrophilic trifluoromethyl cation (CF3+). Oxygen reacts with tris(trifluoromethyl)phosphine by a chain reaction involving the trifluoromethyl radical and its autoxidation. With thermal quenching, tris(trifluoromethyl) phosphate and bis(trifluoromethyl)fluorophosphine oxide are formed. Under conditions of spontaneous ignition the latter compound delivers CF2, a powerful reducing agent.
