Diaryliodonium(iii) salts, as highly active and versatile Lewis acid catalysts for the direct three component Mannich reaction under solvent free conditions, have been investigated. A convenient one pot three component Mannich reaction of acetophenones with aromatic aldehydes and anilines catalysed by (bromodimethyl)sulfonium bromide under solvent free conditions at ambient temperature affording the corresponding β-amino ketones in good yields is described.
