Reactions of 1-cyano-2-methyl-2-selenanaphthalene (I) with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate gave benzocycloheptene derivatives, II and IV, and naphthalenedicarboxylate III, while olefinic electrophiles such as acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, and methyl vinyl ketone reacted with I to afford the cyclopropane derivatives, XII and XIII.
