A synthesis of 4-demethoxyfeudomycinone C is described from the anthraquinone approach utilizing the carbon framework of (3R,5S)-3-hydroxy-5-hydroxymethyl-3-methyl-2-oxotetrahydrofuran. The latter is easily derived from α-D-isosaccharinic acid.
