7-Methylcoumarin-4-acetic acid (1) has been prepared and condensed with aromatic aldehydes to give the corresponding 4-(2-arylethenyl)-7-methyl-2H-1-benzopyran-2-ones (IIa,b).The cycloaddition of IIa,b with maleic anhydride gives the corresponding Diels-Alder adducts (IIIa,b) and (IV).Action of primary amines or hydrazines on III affords the corresponding N-alkyl/N-aryl derivatives (Va-h) and benzopyrano phthalazinetriones (VIa-d), respectively.Reaction of IIIa with aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons under Friedel-Crafts conditions gives 7-(aryl-or alkyl-carbonyl) derivatives (VIII).
