We report a bent-core liquid crystal (LC) compound exhibiting two fluid smectic phases in which two-dimensional, polar, orthorhombic layers order into three-dimensional ferroelectric states. The lower-temperature phase has a uniform polarization field which responds in an analog fashion to applied electric field. The higher-temperature phase is a new smectic state with periodic undulation of the polarization, structurally modulated layers, and a bistable response to applied electric field which originates in the periodically splay-modulated bulk of the LC rather than by surface stabilization at the cell boundaries.

Paragraph 0082-0085, (2017/04/13)
The present invention relates to an asymmetric hockey stick type mesogen compound, and to a preparation method thereof. More particularly, the present invention relates to a novel asymmetric hockey stick type reactive mesogen compound having five benzene groups (5-rings), and a fluorine substituent on benzene at one end thereof. The asymmetric hockey stick type reactive mesogen compound has excellent orientation characteristics of liquid crystal molecules, and thus does not have optical defects such as light leakage, and the like. Also, the asymmetric hockey stick type reactive mesogen compound is suitable to be applied to a vertical alignment (VA) mode, and can be used as a source material for realizing a next generation high speed responsive display operating at a low voltage.

Paragraph 0086; 0097; 0098, (2016/12/01)
The present invention relates to a hockey stick-shaped reactive mesogenic compound and a liquid crystal cell for a VA mode capable of adjusting a pretilt angle of a liquid crystal using the same. According to the present invention, the liquid crystal cell for a VA mode is mechanically and thermally stable, is capable of adjusting a pretilt angle of the liquid crystal, and exhibits excellent black visibility and a high liquid crystal response speed by being produced using the hockey stick-shaped reactive mesogenic compound.COPYRIGHT KIPO 2015
