polarization, structurally modulated layers, and a bistable
response to applied electric field. The confinement of the
splayed polarization structure between stripe domain bounda-
ries leads to an unusual topological ferroelectric bistability. The
experimentally observed weak field susceptibility at high
temperatures in the SmAPFmod phase suggests that, in this
regime, the effective Frank elasticity must be much larger than
expected, a condition which we attribute to renormalization of
the bare splay elastic constant by polarization charge.
