2-Alkoxy acrylate derivatives 8 and 11, readily prepared from D-glucono-1,5-lactone by ring opening and β-elimination, are converted into neuraminic acid analogues 9 and 12 via debenzylation and spontaneous cyclization or ring closure via oxymercuration-demercuration, respectively.
