Hypervalent iodine(III)-Mediated oxidative decarboxylation of β,γ-unsaturated carboxylic acids

A novel oxidative decarboxylation of β,γ-unsaturated carboxylic acids mediated by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents is described. The decarboxylative C-O bond forming reaction proceeded in the presence of PhI(OAc)2 to give the corresponding allylic acetates. In addition, decarboxylative C-N bond formation was achieved by utilizing hypervalent iodine(III) reagents containing an I-N bond. Mechanistic studies suggest the unique reactivity of hypervalent iodine reagents in this ionic oxidative decarboxylation.

Only I and N: Hypervalent iodine(III) reagents with two reactive I-N single bonds have been isolated for the first time. Their solid-state and solution structures provide evidence for enhanced electrophilicity at iodine and nucleophilic character of the imine. The iodine compounds of the present invention corresponds to those of formula (I), wherein R1, R1' and X have several meanings. These iodine compounds gives rise to the amination of several substrates without the need of catalysts, especially metal catalysts, and confer to the amination reaction the further advantage of being performed under mild conditions, which is of interest for industrial-scale production of nitrogenated compounds with pharmaceutical, biological or medicinal applications. Therefore, the iodine compounds of the invention are useful as amination agents. The invention also discloses several processes for the preparation of the iodine compounds of formula (I).
