Synthesis of azetidinones and thiazolidinones and their antimicrobial screening

3-Chloro-1-[6'-{2"-chloro-6'-methyl-(3"-quinolyl) -4'-(substitutedphenyl)pyrimidin-2'-yl)}]-4-(2'"-chlorophenyl) azetidin-2-ones. 5a-j and 3-[6'-{2"-chloro-6"-methyl-(3"- quinolyl)}-4'-(substitutedphenyl)pyrimidin-2'-yl]-4-(2'"-chlorophenyl)-1, 3-thiazolidin-4-ones 6a-j have been synthesized by the reaction of 2-[1"-aza-2"-(2"'-chlorophenyl) vinyl]-6-[{2'-chloro-6'-methyl (3'-quinolyl)}]-4-(substitutedphenyl) pyrimidines 4a-j with chloroacetyl chloride and thioglycollic acid respectively. These compounds have been screened for their antimicrobial activities against different microorganisms. The structures of synthesized compounds have been established on the basis of elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR and Mass spectral data.
