Detection of biofilm bacteria would be an ideal method for the physicians to diagnose chronic bacterial infections directly, but there are few imaging probes available so far. Here, we report the development of a novel biofilm detecting fluorescent probe, CDy14, through an unbiased screening of a fluorescence library and elucidated its binding partner Psl, an exopolysaccharide of the biofilm.
CHEMICAL FLUORESCENT PROBES FOR DETECTING BIOFILMS

Paragraph 00055, (2016/11/14)
The present invention relates to a family of fluorescent compounds based on the BODIPY scaffold, and methods for the preparation of said compounds. The present invention further relates to the use of said compounds for the detection of bacterial biofilms, wherein the bacterial biofilm comprises Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the compound specifically binds to a Fap protein of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or wherein the compound specifically binds to bacterial cells that contain high levels of cyclic-di-guanosine-monophosphate (c-di-GMP).

Lighting up the pancreas: A pancreatic beta cell selective probe PiY (red, see picture) was developed which stains Langerhans islets in live animals without toxicity or side effects. Through tail-vein injection, PiY allowed for a comparison of the islets between healthy and diabetic mice. PiY also facilitated the isolation of healthy Langerhans islets by using a fluorescence-guided surgical procedure. Copyright
