The results of this study show that disilathiane is an effective mediator in the synthesis of alkyl aryl sulfides with disulfides and alkyl carboxylates. Mechanistic studies suggest that disilathiane promotes cleavage of the sulfur–sulfur bond of disulfides to generate thiosilane as a key intermediate. Diselenides were also applicable to this transformation to produce the corresponding selenides.

A sodium dithionite, sodium thiosulfate and rongalite promoted one-pot synthesis of aryl alkyl sulfides at room temperature has been developed. The reactions of a range of disulfides with alkyl halides proceeded smoothly in the presence of rongalite. Possible reaction pathways are discussed and the effects of these sulfites on disulfides are investigated. The important features of this protocol are metal-free, strong-base-free, and mild reaction conditions, operational simplicity, short reaction times and high yields of products. In the reaction of IF5 with alkyl aryl sulfides in heptane under reflux conditions, the arylthio group migrated once and three fluorine atoms were selectively introduced on the alkyl chain. In order to find the reason why the reaction stopped at the trifluorination step, we examined the oxidation potentials of the starting material, a reaction intermediate, and the product, and the time course of the reactions. The sulfone group deactivation for cyclialkylation and cycliacylation reactions in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalysts was demonstrated in a number of aryl chloroalkylsulfones (1-8) and arylsulfonylacyl chlorides (17a-22a), respectively.As expected, the corresponding arylchloroalkyl sulfides (9-16) and arylmercaptoacyl chlorides (13a-28a) underwent ring-closure reaction in most cases under the same conditions.The ease of cyclization was governed by the ring size, the stability of the attacking carbocation and the nucleophilicity of the aryl moiety.Also, the behaviour of benzyl sulfones (29, 31a, and 32a) and sulfides (33, 34a and 36a) was inconsistent.Noteworthy, the Friedel-Crafts cyclization reaction is thus considered an accessible method for the synthesis of compounds 37-41 and 45, 51.
