A closer look: The path for the biosynthesis of aurachin alkaloids (aurachin A is shown) has been deduced by molecular biological methods, including the cloning and sequencing of the biosynthetic gene cluster in the bacterium Stigmatella aurantiaca. The gene cluster encodes a type II polyketide synthase, which was discovered in this form for the first time in a Gram-negative bacterium. (Chemical Equation Presented).
