Condensation of A/-p-chlorophenyl-C-ethoxycarbonylnitrilimine with 3//-2-methyl-4-phenyl[l,5]benzodiazepine leads to the title compound ethyl 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-3a-methyl-5-phenyl-3,3a,4,ll-tetrahydro-3//-[l,2,4] triazolo[4,3-a][l,5]benzodiazepine-l-carboxylate. It has been established that 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition occurs on the N1=C2 double bond of the benzodiazepine. The oxadiazoline ring is practically planar while the diazepine ring adopts a boat conformation. The ethyl chain in the ethoxy group adopts an unusual conformation [torsional angle 118.7(8)°] induced by short contacts in the packing of the hypothetical extended conformation. 1995 International Union of Crystallography.
