Electroreduction of a mixture of aromatic halides ArX and thiophenol in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridinenickel complexes gives the corresponding sulfides, ArSPh, in good yields.The reaction is performed at room temperature using N-methylpyrrolidone as solvent in an undivided cell fitted with a sacrificial magnesium anode.A mechanism is proposed from results of an electroanalytical study.
