Stannane or the methylstannanes SnMe4-nHn (n = 1-4) react in fluorosulphuric acid at low temperature (-90 deg C) to produce SnMe3-nHn+ (n = 0-3) and 1H, 13C, and 119Sn n.m.r. spectroscopy have been used in their characterisation.Hydrogen-evolution, 119Sn n.m.r., and Moessbauer evidence is presented to show that at higher temperatures these species decompose to Sn2+, Sn2+ plus SnMe22+, and SnMe22+ depending on the starting hydride.
