The comparison of 1H NMR (100 MHz) spectra of some ethers and enol ethers with those of their triethylaluminiumate complexes established that the reductive rearrangement of 2-ethoxy-5-alkyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrans, 1, to cyclobutyl derivatives, brought about by AlR3 (R = Et, Bui), is promoted by complexation of the endocyclic oxygen atom of 1.Conformational or stereoelectronic effects in relation with 1H NMR data are discussed.
