Reactions of 1,3-azaenynes with tetrazoles

Tetrazole and 5-substituted tetrazoles react with Schiff bases derived from α,β-acetylenic aldehydes along different pathways, depending on the substituents at the triple bond and on the nitrogen atom: (1) tetrazole addition at the triple bond, accompanied by hydrolysis of the CH=N bond; (2) base-catalyzed addition at the triple bond without hydrolysis of the CH=N bond; and (3) equilibrium addition-elimination at the CH=N bond.
