The simple procedures for the preparation of 1-amino-2-hydroxypropanephosphonic (3) and 1-amino -2-hydroxy-2-phenylethane phosphonic (4) acids in acceptable yields are described. We showed by NMR studies with chiral Pr(hfc)3 shift reagent and by HPLC that the reactions are not stereospecific and both products constitute a mixture of all feasible stereoisomers. The crystal structure of the racemic (3) was also determined by X-Ray.
