The Robinson annelation reaction of (-)-4-isocaranone (22) with methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) and ethyl vinyl ketone (EVK) under mild conditions was carried out.In each case two intermediate compounds, epimers of 7-hydroxy-1,4,4,7-tetramethyltricyclo3,5>decan-10-one (3a and 4a) and 7-ethyl-7-hydroxy-1,4,4-trimethyltricyclo3,5>decan-10-one (3b and 4b), respectively, were obtained.Their structures were established by 1HNMR.
