The kinetics of the methylation of the triethylammonium salt of 5-arylidenerhodanines in dimethylformamide were investigated.The rate constants were determined for methylation at each center of the ambident anion of the substrate.A correlation was obtained between the reaction rate constants and the constants of the substituents in the arylidene group.Proposals are made about the transmission of the effect of the substituent to the ambident reaction center.
