The condensation of hydroquinone monobenzyl ether in the presence of several bases gives a mixture of cyclic oligomers. Using p-benzyloxyphenol, paraformaldehyde, and NaOH in 45:82:1 molar ratio in refluxing xylene, p-(benzyloxy)calix[8]arene (2) was sele

Partial methylation of p-(benzyloxy)calix[6]are:ne leads to the corresponding trimethylated C3v derivative. This compound was used for the synthesis of new functional calixarenes. The presence of the p-(benzyloxy) substituent allows this new C3v derivative to be directly oxidized to the tris(quinone), These new C3v derivatives open the way to new supramolecular receptors, bearing easily derivatized hydroxy groups at the upper rim position.
