The photoreactions of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene and 9-cyanoanthracene in the presence of biphenyl in acetonitrile under oxygen atmosphere gave anthraquinone and 9(10)anthracenone, respectively, via the reaction of the radical anions of cyanoanthracenes with molecular dioxygen.
