It is a colorless, oily liquid that is soluble in organic solvents and has a density of 1.34 g/cm3. Tetrapropyllead is primarily used as an antiknock agent in gasoline, similar to other organolead compounds like tetraethyllead. However, due to its high toxicity and environmental concerns, its use has been largely phased out in many countries. It is also used as a catalyst in certain chemical reactions and as a heat stabilizer in PVC. The compound is highly toxic and exposure can lead to severe health issues, including neurological damage.
