Lithium diphenylcuprate reacts with azobenzene at -5 deg C in THF for 2 h to give a dimetallic species which on hydrolysis gives hydrazobenzene (37 percent) or on benzoylation gives 1,2-dibenzoyl-1,2-diphenylhydrazine (31 percent).Magnesium-based cuprate reagents do not react with azobenzene under these conditions.Magnesium phenylcuprate, however, reduces azoxybenzene to azobenzene (50 percent), although the corresponding methylcuprate affords a near quantitative yield of azobenzene.Magnesium phenylcuprate does not react with benzylideneaniline or benzylidenebutylamine in THF for 4 h.
