Selective benzylic bromination of 2-methylnaphthalene

A practical synthesis of 2-(bromomethyl)naphthalene (1) by selective benzylic bromination of 2-methylnaphthalene (2) with bromine in heptane in the presence of lanthanum acetate hydrate is described.
