The present disclosure provides derivatives of amino acids that have surface-active properties. The amino acid can be naturally-occurring or synthetic, or they may be obtained via a ring-opening reaction of a lactam, such as caprolactam. The amino acid may be functionalized to form a compound that is surface-active and have advantageous surfactant characteristics. The compounds of the present disclosure have low critical micelle concentrations (CMC) as well as superior ability to lower the surface tension of a liquid.

The present disclosure provides formulations of healthcare products, such as: prescription drugs, over the counter drugs; minerals, herbal, and/or vitamin supplements; drugs administered in hospitals, clinics, physician's office, and places of palliative care; vaccines, tissue, organ, and cell transplants and/or grafts and/or infusions; and wound care formulations including topical ointments, lotions, cleaners, wipes, bandages, and dressings. The Active may be included in the formulations as a solute, a solvent, a particle, or an oil immiscible component of the formulation. The Active may be included in tablets, capsules, tinctures, liquids, or emulsions. Transkarbam 12, an ammonium carbamate formed by the reaction of dodecyl 6-aminohexanoate with carbon dioxide, is a highly active, broad-spectrum, nontoxic, and nonirritant transdermal permeation enhancer. It probably acts by a dual mechanism: a part of its activity is associated with the carbamic acid salt and/or its decomposition in the acidic stratum corneum. The ammonium ester thereby released is an active enhancer species as well, and its activity highly depends on the position of the ester group.

Series of esters of 6-aminohexanoic acid, 7-aminoheptanoic acid, and 8-aminooctanoic acid were synthesized as candidates for novel skin penetration enhancers. The permeation of theophylline expressed in the form of the enhancement factor (EF) was studied with human cadaver skin by a diffusion cell technique in the presence of the esters 1-17 in the water vehicle. The permeation in the presence of the 6-aminohexanoates 1-5 was also studied in the olive oil vehicle. Of the compounds tested, the most satisfactory enhancement in the water vehicle and oil vehicle were observed with octyl 6-aminohexanoate (EF = 45.5) and decyl 6-aminohexanoate (EF = 19.5), respectively.
