Dimethyl 4,6-dioxo-4H,6H-benzodipyran-2,8-dicarboxylate (IIIa), 2,8-dimethyl-4,6-dioxo-4H,6H-benzodipyran (IIIb), 4,6-dioxo-4H,6H-benzodipyran (IIIc) have been prepared starting from 5-acetyl-2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone (I) making use of Claisen condensation. 4,6-dioxo-4H,6H-benzodipyran-3,7-dicarboxaldehyde (IId) has been prepared from I using Vilsmeier-Haack reaction.IIIa is found to be a good antiallergic agent and its activity is comparable to that of disodium cromoglycate, a well known drug.
