Complex formation between N4CoIII(aq) and pyrophosphate and its influence on the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate to orthophosphate have been studied by means of 31P NMR over the pH range 0-12. Most experiments were undertaken with N4 = (tn)2; for comparison (en)2 and tren were also examined. There is evidence that the reactive species in regard to hydrolysis is a 3:1 N4CoIII-pyrophosphate complex. At 25°C and pH 7,t1/2 is 1 h, compared with 10 years for corresponding solutions in the absence of cobalt complexes; the enhancement in rate is thus ~105.
