Synthesis and characterization of 1,1′-diphospharuthenocenes

Reaction of [RuCl2(cod)]n (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) with lithium 2,5-dialkylphospholide or 1-stannyl-2,5-dialkylphosphole gives Ru(η5-PC4H2-2,5-R2)2 (R = (-)-menthyl, 4a; or cyclohexyl, 4b). Steric bulkiness of the R groups is a crucial factor for the successful preparation of the 1,1′-diphospharuthenocenes. The structure of the complex 4b was studied by X-ray single-crystal structure determination, which clarified the distance between the nearly planar η5-phospholyl ligand and the ruthenium center in the complex, being 1.811 A?.
