In this study, [Fe(dibm)3] (dibm=diisobutyrylmethane) is shown to have unusually broad scope as a catalyst for the selective monoalkylation of a diverse set of 1,2- and 1,3-diol-containing structures. The mechanism is proposed to proceed via a cyclic dioxolane-type intermediate, formed between the iron(III) species and two adjacent hydroxyl groups. This approach represents the first transition-metal catalysts that are able to replace stoichiometric amounts of organotin reagents in regioselective alkylation. The reactions generally lead to very high regioselectivities and high yields, on par with, or better than, previous methods used for regioselective alkylation.
Efficient and regioselective ring-opening of epoxides with alcohols and sodium azide by using catalytic amounts of gacl3/polyvinylpyrrolidone

A new polymeric catalyst was prepared by supporting GaCl3 on cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone (GaCl3/ PVP). This catalyst was employed for efficient and regioselective ring-opening reaction of epoxides by various alcohols under solvent-free conditions at room temperature. In our procedure, this heterogeneous catalyst was used at neutral and mild reaction conditions to afford high yields of β-alkoxy alcohols. Also, regioselective conversion of epoxides to β-azidohydrines was accomplished by sodium azide in MeOH in the presence of GaCl3/PVP at room temperature. GaCl3/PVP is a non-hygroscopic and recoverable catalyst and is easily separated from reaction mixture by a simple filtration and re-used repeatedly. Also, this catalyst has good handling and can be stored for long time without any reducing of its reactivity.
Erbium(III) triflate is a highly efficient catalyst for the synthesis of β-alkoxy alcohols, 1,2-diols and β-hydroxy sulfides by ring opening of epoxides

Chemo- and stereoselectivity in the ring-opening reaction of epoxides with erbium(III) triflate are described. Epoxides can be cleaved under neutral conditions with alcohols and thiols in the presence of catalytic amounts of Lewis acid, affording the corresponding β-alkoxy alcohols and β-hydroxy sulfides in high yields. In water, epoxide ring opening occurs to produce the corresponding diols in good yields.
Nucleophilic Addition to Cyclic 1,2-Sulfites

, p. 617 - 619 (2007/10/02)
Addition of heteroatom nucleophiles has been shown to attack at either the C5- or the S-atom sites in 4-(benzyloxymethyl)-1,3-dioxa-2-thiolane 2-oxide.No C4-reactivity was observed. The regioselectivity depended on the type of nucleophile.
