52-28-8 Usage

Chemical Properties

White to Off-White Solid

Uses

Present in opium from 0.7% to 2.5%, depending on the source. Weak narcotic analgesic, perhaps due to conversion to morphine, with minimal hypnotic properties; potent antitussive. Controlled substance (opiate)

General Description

Colorless small crystals or white powder. Odorless. Bitter taste. Solutions are acid to litmus. pH (4% solution) 4.2-5.

Air & Water Reactions

Water soluble.

Reactivity Profile

codeine phosphate is sensitive to exposure to light. . Materials that are acidic salts are generally soluble in water. The resulting solutions contain moderate concentrations of hydrogen ions and have pH's of less than 7.0. They react as acids to neutralize bases. These neutralizations generate heat, but less or far less than is generated by neutralization of inorganic acids, inorganic oxoacids, and carboxylic acid. They usually do not react as either oxidizing agents or reducing agents but such behavior is not impossible.

Fire Hazard

Flash point data for codeine phosphate are not available; however, codeine phosphate is probably combustible.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 52-28-8 includes 5 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 2 digits, 5 and 2 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 2 and 8 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 52-28:
(4*5)+(3*2)+(2*2)+(1*8)=38
38 % 10 = 8
So 52-28-8 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF OPIATES

-

Page/Page column 4-5, (2008/06/13)

A morphine component, e.g., a concentrate of poppy straw, is converted into codeine in high yield and high purity and in a highly controlled manner. The conversion process involves the following steps: (a) providing a solution or suspension of a morphine component in an inert solvent or a mixture of solvents; (b) methylating the resultant solution or suspension with a methylating agent in the presence of an alkaline ingredient; and (c) recovering the resultant codeine as the free base or as a salt.
