We have developed a new, versatile method for the selective alkylation of benzodiazepin-2,5-diones using KF on Al2O3. The use of a reagent on a solid support makes this process suitable for the preparation of combinatorial libraries. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Reaction of isatoic anhydrides (1) and α-amino acids (2) in glacial acetic acid under reflux gave 3H-1(H),4(H)-benzodiazepin-2,5-diones (3) in good yields.These compounds have been characterised by UV, IR, mass, PMR and 13C-NMR spectra.
