Anticonvulsant properties of some new 3 phenyl 2,5 pyrrolidinediones

The synthesis and mass spectrum analysis is described of some p amino, and p nitro derivatives of 1 methyl 3 phenyl 2,5 pyrrolidinedione and 1,3 dimethyl 3 phenyl 2,5 pyrrolidinedione, which bear certain structural similarities to the drug aminoglutethimide. Most of the new 3 phenyl 2,5 pyrrolidinediones possessed anti leptazol activity in mice at doses which had minimal effects upon locomotor activity. In these tests and against maximal electroshock the compounds were of approximately the same order of potency as the related established anticonvulsants phensuximide and methsuximide.
