This ester is formed by the reaction of phosphorous acid with two molecules of propanol and one molecule of ethanol. Ethyl dipropyl ester is primarily used as a stabilizer for halogenated hydrocarbons, such as chlorinated solvents, to prevent the formation of acidic byproducts that can lead to corrosion. It is also employed as a flame retardant, plasticizer, and in the synthesis of other organophosphorus compounds. Due to its phosphorus content, it can act as a chelating agent, which is beneficial in stabilizing metal ions that might otherwise catalyze unwanted reactions.
