Synthesis of a series of novel 3,4-dihydro-2-phenyloxeteno[2,3-a]carbazoles 3a-e has been accomplished in good yield from 1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazoles 1a-e by mixed aldol condensation with benzaldehyde followed by photocyclization. The products are characterised by spectral means.
