Usage

General Description

2,3-dihydro-[1,4]dioxino[2,3-b]pyridine-6-carbaldehyde, also known as alloxan, is a chemical compound commonly used in scientific research as a toxin to induce diabetes in laboratory animals. It is a white crystalline solid with a chemical formula of C4H2N2O4 and is derived from uric acid. Alloxan is known to cause pancreatic beta cell destruction, leading to a reduction in insulin production and consequent hyperglycemia in animals. Due to its toxic effects on pancreatic cells, alloxan is often utilized in diabetes research to study the mechanisms of beta cell damage and potential treatments for the condition. Additionally, alloxan is also used in the production of indigo dyes and as a reagent in organic synthesis.
