Irradiation of the title compound in 1,3-dioxolane and in tetrahydrofuran respectively afforded the D-gluco and D-manno isomers having 1,3-dioxolan-2-yl and terahydrofuran-2-yl group at C-2, besides the glycosid-3-ulose and nitro alcohol; in the later case, the dimer was also isolated.
