Kinetic studies on the reaction between and anhydrous HCl in tetrahydrofuran show that the formation of + occurs by two pathways, one involving direct protonation at the metal and the other involving initial attack at a hydrido ligand to generate 2-H2)(PMePh2)4>+ which subsequently rearranges to give the pentahydride.
