Palladium catalyzed hydrogenation of 2-(2-pyridylmethylene)-3(2H)-benzofuran-3-ones (1-3) gave besides the expected 2,α-dihydro products 8-10 pentacyclic dimers formed by an attack of a semihydrogenated species on the substrate.
