The stannocanes of the type [O(CH2CH2S) 2SnR2](R=Me1,Bun 2,Ph3) have been synthesized in an improved method by the reaction of R2SnCl2 with 2, 2′-oxydiethanethiol O(CH2CH2SH)2 in molar ratio of 1:1 at the presence of sodium ethoxide in anhydrous ethanol. The reactions are carried out under inert atmosphere. These compounds have been extensively characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, multi-nuclear (1H, 13C, 119Sn) NMR, elemental analysis and mass spectrometry. The obtained data clearly indicates that, there is a strong interaction between oxygen atom of the ligand as a donor and Sn atom of the organotin species as a Lewis acid acceptor. Therefore, the resulted dithiostannocanes possess a transannular secondary bonding and hypervalency at the central Sn atom which leads to an increase in the coordination number of tin from four to five-coordinated tin. On Heterocyclic Systems Containing Tin, IV. 5,5-Diphenyl-1,4,6,5-oxadithiastannocane, a Conformational Transition State Stabilized in a Crystal Structure

, p. 2051 - 2055 (2007/10/02)
The title compound 1f has been synthesized from Ph2SnCl2 and the disodium salt of bis(2-mercaptoethyl)ether.The crystal structure has been determined and refined to a R of 0.054.The conformation found for the 8-membered heterocycle lies near the saddle point of the energy surface between chair-chair and boat-chair conformation. The configuration around tin marks a transition from tetrahedral four to trigonal bipyramidal five coordination (transannular distance Sn...O 266.0 (7) pm).
UEBER ZINN-HALTIGE HETEROCYCLEN. V. Sn-PHENYL-SUBSTITUIERTE STANNOCANE, UEBERGAENGE VON TETRAEDRISCHER 4-ZU TRIGONAL-BIPYRAMIDALER 5-KOORDINATION

A complete series of diphenyl and mixed methyl/chlorine/bromine/iodinephenyl substituted oxadithia- and trithiastannocanes has been prepared by reactions between the respective disodium dithiolates and tin dihalides. The 13C NMR chemical shifts of these compounds and the coupling constants J(119Sn-13C) are dependent upon the magnetic anisotropy of the substituents and the bond angles at the tin atom. The crystal structure of 2,2-diphenyl-1,3,6-trithia-2-stannocane has been determined and refined to R=0.039.The environment of Sn is a monocapped tetrahedron (transannular distance Sn...S 324.6(1) pm). This type of coordination, intermediate between a tetrahedron and a trigonal bipyramid, is discussed quantitatively and compared with a series of analogous compounds. The eight-membered ring has the boat-chair conformation.
