Oxidation Reaction of 2- and 4-Hydroxypyridines

Benzoyl peroxide reacts with 2-hydroxypyridine (I) in chloroform to give 3-benzoyloxy-2-hydroxypyridine (IIIa) and pyridine-2,3-dione (IV).However, with 4-hydroxypyridine (II) it gives 4,4',4''-trihydroxy-3,3',3''-terpyridyl (V) and trichloromethyl-4-hydroxypyridine (VI).The latter appears to have been formed by substitution in II with trichloromethyl radical produced from the interaction of benzoyl peroxide with chloroform.
