During phase-transfer glycosylation of the pyrrolopyrimidine 1a with 2,3,5-tri-O-benzyl-1-bromo-D-arabinofuranose in aqueous NaOH/CH2Cl2 in the presence of molar amounts of tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate a by-product of the aglycon was observed.Using the same conditions, but omitting the halogenose the same substance was obtained and assigned to have the structure 4b.The novel 7,7'-methylenedipyrrolopyrimidine is a suitable model for the study of stacking interactions.
