Benzoyl peroxide on reaction with 4-acetaminophenol (I) gives 2-benzoyloxy-5-acetaminophenol (II) and 2-benzoyloxy-4-acetaminophenol (III) the former being formed in comparatively larger amount. The structure of III was established by its synthesis involving acetylation of 4-aminocatechol-2-benzoate (IV).The initially formed o-benzoyloxylated compound (III) undergoes isomerization to give II.Isolation of II and III together, clearly demonstrates that the reaction of benzoyl peroxide with phenols involves trans-benzoyloxylation.
